Naboa Tulum

Located in Tulum, on a square plot of 2,500 m², Naboa was conceived with the premise of creating a project where architecture and landscape converge in an atmosphere of relaxation and comfort. This intention materializes through pure and orderly geometries that contrast with the pre-existing untamed vegetation. The volumes are arranged around the pool and the tropical garden, which act as the central organizing element of the project. This layout gives the complex an introspective character, creating a microclimate that ensures privacy and fosters the development of a distinct identity. The hotel features 10 rooms, distributed in two different typologies. The ground-floor units follow a horizontal spatial composition that encourages a direct connection with the surroundings through outdoor terraces and indoor-outdoor bathrooms. The upper floor rooms, offer a vertical reading, which includes a double-height social area and two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, resolved through a mezzanine. The result is spacious, well-ventilated interiors that perform adequately in Tulum’s warm and humid climate. The architecture is solid and enclosed when privacy and introspection are required, and open and transparent when visual connections with the landscape and the pool area are desired, especially in spaces with a more social character. The reception area is designed as a linear pavilion with a solid concrete and chukum base, topped by a lightweight wooden roof that appears to float within the jungle. This effect is achieved through slender columns that blend with the surrounding trees.

What if the Smallest Detail Helped Shape the Mood of a Space?

Across recent architectural discourse, interior design has been centered on how spaces shape psychological and atmospheric experience, and on what gives interior environments their emotional resonance. Attention has shifted toward small details rather than relying primarily on form or structure. Light, for instance, is not only a technical requirement but also an architectural material in its own right. It can structure space, animate surfaces, define textures, and shape atmosphere while influencing well-being. At the same time, the characteristics between minimalism and maximalism shape how atmospheres are perceived, prompting reflection on how approaches to simplicity or exuberance might influence mood. Rather than existing as opposing aesthetics, these tendencies explore how interiors interact with mental states, reflect personal identity, and respond to the subtle shifts in the way people inhabit and experience space. Materiality remains equally central. Surfaces and their honest expression carry weight in shaping interior character. Discussions around material authenticity challenge reliance on decorative layers or synthetic replicas, redirecting attention toward how materials age, how they feel to the touch, and how they build atmosphere over time. Instead of acting merely as finishes, materials operate as carriers of meaning, longevity, and craft. And somewhere between light that sets rhythm, spatial arrangements that quiet the mind or heighten alertness, and materials that record use and age, a quieter question emerges: how do the smallest architectural components participate in this larger atmospheric language? Experiencing Space Through Flexibility: Mix and Match Even seemingly minor components, such as switches, sockets, and control interfaces, reveal their significance when considered through the lens of light, materiality, and atmosphere. A single touch can mediate one of the most influential forces in architecture: light. Through a single interface, direction, intensity, hue, and timing can be adjusted, allowing light itself to shape a room's atmosphere. The physical presence of these components adds another surface to the composition, raising questions of material coherence, authenticity, and visual calm. Brands such as Gira offer a lens into this interplay, where mix-and-match switches, socket outlets, Smart Home devices, and outdoor intercoms create a framework in which these elements adapt to a broader architectural narrative rather than imposing an external style.

Forest Futures: Rethinking Architecture of Forest Ecosystems and Ecological Balance

Forests are among the most complex yet vital ecosystems on Earth. They regulate climate, support biodiversity, and sustain human communities. With the growing realities of climate change and environmental degradation, architects, planners, and engineers now face a new imperative: designing within forests in ways that sustain the ecosystems on which they depend. When designing within a forest ecosystem, it is critical to move beyond isolating environmental factors as individual climatic events or categories of warming impacts. Effective design must respond to the intricate, interdependent relationships between soil, vegetation, wildlife, and human communities. Poorly executed construction can fragment habitats, degrade soil health, disrupt natural water cycles, and increase vulnerability to wildfires and erosion. The built environment should actively support the forest's health, preserve biodiversity, and enhance resilience in the face of future uncertainties to mitigate risk. Achieving this requires prioritizing both sustainability and adaptability, ensuring that structures remain functional, safe, and attuned to the evolving needs of the ecosystem as climate conditions change. From ventilation strategies and ecological disruption in tropical rainforests to fire resilience in temperate forests and foundation typologies in boreal regions, the following insights highlight how thoughtful, context-driven design can ensure buildings coexist with their surroundings while promoting long-term resilience for people and the ecosystems they inhabit. Through these specific strategies, architecture can adapt to the ever-changing conditions of the forest while minimizing environmental impact and enhancing community well-being.
